i purchased panp7 in late december 2010 , received in january. ordered upgraded ram (4gb) , faster stock hard drive. excited , had high expectations. upgrading 3 year old dell laptop that, while useful, getting bit cumbersome in terms of performance , weight.

first disappointment came shortly after ordered, when noticed price of ram upgrade, had questioned before ordering, dropped $20. bit of bummer, not huge deal.

second disappointment when received laptop , found bottom cover, ram installed, not seated when replaced, had out screw driver , put cover on properly. again, not huge deal.

else seemed pretty smooth, although did not feel of keyboard did more typical laptop keyboard of dell. that, however, minor detail. bigger problems have revolved around touchpad, wireless adapter, , general stability.

first, touchpad. basically, no matter driver setting have selected, nor version of ubuntu have used (it supposed fixed in 11.04), touchpad has behaved erratically. vexing issue respond though have touched when have not. occurs when typing , moves focus wherever mouse cursor happened be, disruptive.

1 might assume accidentally touching touchpad when happens, has happened when not touching other keyboard.

touchpad becomes totally erratic when in use, although happens few seconds , discontinuing use briefly restore proper operation.

have corresponded system76 tech support multiple times issue , responses have received have varied "it's fixed in next version of ubuntu [11.04]" "it go away once has been broken bit more". none of has resolved issue satisfaction. other suggestion tech support had disable touchpad when want type long documents, non-optimal.

wireless issue have been experiencing causes wireless card drop connection , not able reconnect. have 2 waps @ house , once occurs can still see both of them cannot connect either 1 until reboot machine. supposedly support send me replacement card, have not received response formal request month ago.

irritating, however, fact when leave laptop running "long" time (usually less 24 hours), lock hard. once have shut off holding down power button, have turn on turn off again before can turn on , boot. first boot after failure gives me series of beeps.

have been working system76 tech support on issue months trying figure out problem is, including running live cd several days , doing system restore upgrading 11.04 11.04. nothing has resolved issue, , still persists day.

because personal, home computer, not have lot of time spend trying make work. quite frankly, had higher expectations of both laptop , of tech support. old dell more stable in general , seemed better supported 1 time did have issue.

panp7 has been huge source of frustration , regret purchasing it. better off if had spent money on else. sadly, cannot recommend system76 machine, despite how to.

it not way business ship defective product, , leave customer hanging while futzing endlessly. if problem cannot resolved within first few tries, computer should replaced. have happy customer praise service , steer others way. , system76 able study problem @ factory, learn went wrong, improve manufacturing process these defects , others not recur, , improve quality assurance testing ensure defective products never leave factory.
