Thread: How can I tell if my video card has failed?

hi, i'm running dimension 5000, dual booting both ubuntu (with kde desktop) , windows xp.

machine has been exhibiting odd behaviour , error messages when running software more graphics intensive standard "office" type packages. can give more details of software, behaviour , messages if necessary isn't main point of post.

thought problems might associated health of installed video card booted windows , opened windows "device manager" begin (as can't work out equivalent procedure in ubuntu) check out , found there no "display adapter" showing @ in device listing. i'm wondering if means on-board pci-e video card has failed completely, suppose might explain problems? display appears working of time. i've tried taking card out, wiping contacts , reinstalling didn't make difference.

i'm in ubuntu (by preference) now. there can within ubuntu check health of video card?

additional information: downloaded dell support center , ran diagnostic.
hardware registers appears ok, including pci slots. 1 of 4 pci slots registering having hardware installed although 3 of 4 slots filled. slot usage follows:

pci express x 16 carrying ex-factory installed graphics card (presumably "x300se") nothing registering in slot.
pci slot (registering port 2660) blank , registering blank.
pci slot (registering port 2662) carrying ex-factory installed modem registering blank.
pci express x 1 carrying wireless network card (new , installed) , appears registering correctly.

see support centre telling me have drivers missing 4 items, follows:

video controller (vga compatible)
video controller
pci modem
multimedia audio controller

when try install drivers via windows , device manager route, search compatible driver on dell drivers , utilities cd fails. have tried downloading , reinstalling drivers directly dell process fails during setup process error message says "one or more files required installation either missing or corrupt - setup exit".

if has ideas can try next i'll grateful hear them.

regards

chris

go on terminal , try lspci . list connected hardware. find exact model of vga, go find , install drivers (both os).

don't think there's physically wrong board. lacking drivers.
way, "update driver" of windows never worked. once know manufacturer, go website. if it's laptop, go laptop's manufacturer site. (eg, old laptop's x1400 drivers existed on dell's website, not on ati's).
