Adjustment brush only works at the margins

i downloaded trial version of lightroom 4 onto macbook pro , when try use adjustment brush cursor turns brush when hover part of photograph changes @ edges of picture. when move cursor towards center of photo cursor changes arrow , cannot make adjustments. if start adjustment @ edge of photo can drag center of it, cannot release , further painting in region. @ point brush icon changes cursor becomes small arrow points edge of frame , if hold down left mouse button , move transition line becomes double facing arrow, can drag area can work in make smaller, cannot increase area. gives?

this sounds me if not apply new brush, in editing mode of existing one.

so let's verify theory:

 

do see grey small circle, called "pin" of adjustment? may have black center - meaning selected.

if not see it, make sure visibility toggled "on":  make sure see toolbar underneath image (toggles on-off letter t). in left corner have drop-down-menu "show edit pins": should set auto (or always, case). letter h toggles.

 

to see mask have painted can toggle letter o (oh, not zero).

 

on right-hand side in mask panel see 2 entries new | edit. assume "edit" highlighted (brighter white font).

if hit "delete", total pin , brush deleted.

 

if click on "new", new grey pin should behave expect.

 

 

the double-facing arrow pretty cool feature, actually, modify applied slider settings brush relative each other.

that means advisable overdo amount, see effect , can have mask overlay toggled off (o), readjust subtle taste dragging left. or further exaggerate dragging right.
