Thread: Minimizing / hiding - do you use it? If so, how?

minimizing or hiding - you?

had recent discussion here minimizing dock in unity, , of have seen conversations on gnome shell's choice remove minimizing entirely on basis of improved workspace management. decision gnome devs based in part on idea no 1 knows minimizing for - people use extensively, people don't use @ all, , there's no clear method it. an e-mail owen taylor on gnome team of might have read included description of possible reasons people use minimize feature:

quote posted owen taylor
* because tidy desktop. think lot of people uncomfortable desktop window working overlapping other windows - looking @ "gigantic pile of papers". these people working few windows on clean desktop. still have larger set of windows open less immediate tasks.

* because maximized windows interact badly unmaximized windows. if have task involves looking @ multiple unmaximized windows, switch maximized web browser, getting other state hard - have select each window in turn without accidentally selecting maximized window again.

* find window behind other windows - if select windows clicking on them, , can't see window or windows want, minimization can way of getting big or maximized window out of way , working windows underneath.

* "save windows later" - if open windows represent tasks, responding email or reading pdf of paper, might not want them directly in face interfering work doing first.
one add, desktops support icons, users make use of minimizing @ them.

curious see habits have minimizing or hiding. use @ all, , if so, in situations?

think of minimizing "saving windows later," first , foremost. settings use in compiz , dockbarx, minimized windows ignored part, such in alt+tab, exposé, or clicking group icon not windows minimized. keeps windows out of way until need them, , can retrieve them dock. think of different separating concurrent unrelated tasks on separate workspaces.

have compiz set keep hidden windows on present workspace @ times (while dockbarx set ignore non-minimized windows other workspaces.) keep gmail window , music player running minimized @ times, can play , skip media controls, receive desktop notifications gmail, etc., , pull related windows if need be. often, i'll have gedit running notepad well. it's nice able access things these on whatever workspace i'm on brief interactions, stow them away again. (some apps use systray items kind of interaction, don't care - manage windowed applications dock if @ possible. don't have think little row of icons use stuff.)

find myself minimizing windows things underneath, consider bad habit , try use exposé instead if have urge so, if means invoking 2 or 3 times pull windows need to. if need tidy workspace, switch workspace, , don't use desktop icons, don't find myself falling habits.

when use minimizing , why? or, if don't use it, feelings on it?

i'm gnome-shell user, default no-minimise button. altered lots of settings in gs, still don't have altered windows button settings.

if it's made easy bring background window on top, don't need minimise imho.
