Thread: Blank "Wallpaper" Background

i have installed ubuntu first time couple of days ago. using toshiba satellite-p500 series laptop. it's big 1 18.4 in screen. have 2.1 ghz centrino 2 dual core processor, 4gb ddr2 ram, , discrete ati m96 mobility radeon hd 4650 video card. running ubuntu 11.04 x64 on dual boot install windows vista. installation ran perfectly, downloaded iso , burned cd, rebooted , installed through boot selection menu. after installation completed (i ticked box download updates during install, left off proprietary software option after configuring wifi) when rebooted, greeted username , prompted password. after entering password, speakers play little "ubuntu start music", of "icons" , such gone, have purple "wallpaper" on screen. (forgive windows terms, don't know called yet). not know many keyboard shortcuts linux, ctrl + alt + t not cause terminal appear. have found can press ctrl + alt + f5 , terminal prompt username , password , after signing in standard linux command line me@cpuname:~$. reason lead believe have (mostly) healthy operating system running under hood, not sure should graphical side going. also, have used sudo blah update command (can't remember what) lot of updates failed download (i think wifi no longer configured, , don't know how terminal interface) , ones did download (presumably during install) unpacked , installed themselves. other note can press ctrl + alt + f7 return blank "wallpaper" view. nothing i've thought try has helped me , don't know @ step step instruction appreciated if has idea problem is. if need more information try respond post promptly.

if can manage hard wire connection install/updates etc; best ubuntu might need download driver wireless card.
