Thread: Help me understand how DHCP and Static IP's work

i have problem understanding how dhcp , static ip addresses work exactly.

if use dhcp give out ip addresses, our security router (using untangle) has ability save ip addresses mac address each time pc receive same ip. if used static ip (outside dhcp pool). since our dhcp server doesn't give out...how other pc's in our office know pc static ip exists? pc static ip broadcast out message our network it's there? know can add static ip , mac address our dhcp server, i'm trying solve (and understand) happen if our dhcp server (router) failed...how can keep our office running until problem fixed.

in advance help/insight may provide.

yes you're right, broadcast out it's ip address.

when pc wants know has ip address 192.168.1.2, broadcasts out packet (known arp broadcast) asks pcs on broadcast domain if pc has ip address 192.168.1.2. pc ip address replies , says 'that's me!'.

once has happened, router should make note of ip address , mac address maps means in future doesn't need ask.

problem static ips can become cumbersome manage if there many of them.
