Thread: Dell Help?

well installed ubuntu 10.10 on dell latitude d520 have no idea how enable wifi, i'm not familiar laptops. awesome.

in advance.

first off, make sure wifi physically switched 'on' if there physical on/off switch provided. done key combination of 'fn' key + other key depending upon laptop model, or in models, merely touching wifi led @ laptop's led panel.

after that, assuming using default gnome desktop, @ right side of upper panel. there should network manager's icon (four concentric curves, or 2 up-down arrows). right click on , make sure there tick mark beside "enable networking". left-click on see list of available networks (that is- if wifi adapter working , there wireless networks available in range). if see any, click on , provide passphrase if asked. if no networks found, or if wifi adapter not working, open terminal (application > accessories > terminal), enter following commands one-by-one, , post outputs here:
code:
sudo lshw -c network ifconfig -a iwconfig rfkill list all
also, if see networks available can't connect them (passphrase not accepted), need add/edit network in network manager (right-click on networkmanager icon > edit connections... > wireless tab > add or edit button) , make sure correct encryption type selected (wep/wpa/wpa2 etc) in security tab.
