Migration to Joomla 3 - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support
i have been trying , failing automatic migration of joomla 2.5 site joomla 3.0. test migration mechanism, created brand new joomla 2.5.28 site on own localhost, no added extensions , default test material provided joomla 2.5 installer. tried migrate super-simple test site joomla 3. failure! code updated ok, disappeared blank screen. when clicked refresh address, error message appeared saying had failed delete key usertype in table _users.
on investigation on forums, found way file /administration/components/com_admin/sql/updates/mysql/3.0.0.sql, contains sql instructions needed update database structure 2.5.28 3.0.0. on examining file, found there 2 identical instructions delete key usertype table _users. of course first instruction successful, second instruction fail, there no such key.
this gave me not lot of faith in migration software, , begs question how can ever have worked. however, undaunted, tried again, time after starting upgrade nipped in ever quick edit 3.0.0.sql file deleting 1 of offending instructions. magically, no longer had error message had had before, found replaced similar error message column whosonline in table _session. yet edit of 3.0.0.sql, , error message replaced 1 key imagepos in table _contact_details.
what going on!!!? have followed instructions in joomla docs "step step migration of joomla 2.5 3.x", although had no added extensions these instructions simplified (a) changing error reporting maximum (b) disabling remember me , (c) changing joomla update option short term.

i agree you're saying. never able "update" (it migration) 3.0 following guide. tried many, many times , on small sites, never worked.
the way migration creating clean instance of latest joomla version , migrate data old website. sure, it's longer process clicking on update button, works , don't run issues because of file incompatibility between 2 versions of joomla.
