Thread: Is incompatible hardware becoming largely a thing of the past?

linux has traditionally been labled os doesn't work modern hardware. i've beginning feel no longer true. posted experience few times in different posts, thought kinda interesting see rest of community stands on this. isn't windows vs linux either. reason posting because never have alter or mess around anything; buy something, works. other people tend complain how nothing works, , i'm kinda confused it.

wireless works out of box on pcs i've used on. example, tried ubuntu 11.04 live usb on few (5 or 6; dunno card) computers @ store before buying one. every pc had working wireless except one. bought 1 did not have out of box wireless support; google search revealed latest kernel included it. working on oneiric beta.

graphics cards weak point in linux before. experience, both nvidia , ati/amd excellent in department. ubuntu dual boot seems have comparable fps on windows 7; in cases, it's better. open source nvidia , amd out of box setups on desktops these days also. not ready laptops yet, there assume.

audio seems have par quality between windows 7 , natty. think windows 7 works better here, in general notice in specific places. overall, sound quality identical.

haven't found printer yet hasn't worked generic drivers available in ubuntu or fedora. scanner works out of box no tinkering. cameras work fine , instantly detected shotwell.

needs limited, or old stigma no longer true? please, post experiences on machines made within last 3 years.

isn't "praise linux" thread, please don't post worksforme or anti-windows/apple replies. people lucky, don't. point of thread community feedback ubuntu stands when buying new pc or peripheral. it'll end in recurring, though.

tl;dr: linux still suck hardware?

edit: reminder talking modern machines. in if go out , buy new pc or device, work or not.

my experience; linux lags (state of art) hardware @ least 1 yr.

details: ~10 months ago, purchased new dell vostro i3 intel processor , amd discrete gpu. 10.04lts , 10.10 didn't work on new hardware. 11.04 worked somewhat, , amd graphics not supported. in last few weeks, 11.04 working pretty well, except amd gpu.

now, throw in power bug in latest kernels, , 1 argue ubuntu/linus still not should be.
