Exporting to PDF - How Can I Get A Small File Size When Using Lots of Vector Art?

i trying create small pdf file e-book distribution purposes. indesign pages contain variety of photographs, vector icons , vector maps.

a publisher in britain similar books on mac using creative suite able create 22-page document similar mine (similar icons, graphics, density, etc) 2.84 mb, small fraction of file size i'm getting! i've included sample page of below, low-res jpeg, on original pdf of text , images (except jpeg cliff background) super sharp - vectors when zoom in. i've included screenshots of pdf export settings.

i don't know if he's exporting directly out of indesign, best guess is.

my vector-based icons, numbers , maps bloating pdfs considerably. when remove them, indesign , exported pdf file sizes drop dramatically. life of me, can't figure out how got such small pdf files sizes using vector art! pdf graphic compression settings don't seem include options vector art.

my vector art graphics (numbering, icons, maps) saved illustrator ai files , placed in indesign linked graphics. best guess why can't achieve smaller pdf files i'm either doing wrong vector graphics or handling/exporting them improperly out of indesign.

i using cs4 pc , on dell machine running windows 7.
