Thread: Boot to Grub Prompt

i hope can suggest solution grub boot problem, on every reboot grub> prompt. have tried use of examples , suggestions found in these forums have not resolved problem far. attach output boot rescue cd explain details; http://paste.debian.net/129651

have 4 2tb drives setup a media server small boot partition on sda1 ext4 no raid, raid 1 swap partition, raid 5 ext4 root partition , raid 5 ext4 file store samba shares stored. set boot partition no raid had trouble setting in raid 1 configuration.

since upgrade 10.04 lts server 11.04 server cannot resolve boot issue. there no other operating systems on server , running 32 bit version setup these disks on old 386 server, moved disks onto new amd64 athlon motherboard , booted immediatly, until upgrade.

appreciate anyone's suggestions @ point, work on windows machines first serious attempt using ubuntu , working months.

your boot info script output indicates you're using guid partition table (gpt) partitioning , you've got syslinux in mbr. i'm not sure how got configured in way; it's unusual. typically, grub's mbr code end in mbr. furthermore, on gpt disk booting on bios-based computer, should have bios boot partition on boot disk. (but see below if you're not booting way.) don't see gaps big enough hold bios boot partition, you'll need shrink @ least 1 partition make room it. in fact, partitions not aligned use on advanced format disks. might or might not have such disks, unless you're 100% positive they're non-advanced format disks, recommend re-doing whole partition layout, since the performance hit improper alignment can huge. new disks of capacity advanced format models.

if you've got new computer, it's possible it's booting in uefi mode rather in bios mode. requires efi system partition (esp) rather bios boot partition. you've got partition that's marked such on /dev/sda, it's got ext4 filesystem on it, improper esp. thus, don't think you're booting in uefi mode. if you're not sure if computer supports uefi booting, you'll have post exact model number of motherboard or computer, or check manual (which doesn't make matter quite clear). fwiw, ubuntu's installer tends create dinky esps. usual advice make them 100-200 mib in size, prefer making them on big end of scale or bigger -- say, 200-300 mib. makes them big enough hold several linux kernels, useful if end using elilo boot loader.

sum up, recommend following:

  1. wipe partitions disks.
  2. repartition, aligning partitions advanced format use.
  3. when repartition, create bios boot partition of ~1 mib.
  4. when repartition, create fat32-format esp of 200-300 mib.
  5. re-install everything. if install in uefi mode, you'll have flag esp "efi boot partition" (i think that's ubuntu installer calls it).
