Thread: Can't connect to wireless networks

i have wireless network works fine laptop (which has ubuntu studio 10.04 installed), has never worked desktop despite years , years of wasting occasional weekend trying...

today, got further usual updating firmware (to 1.8.2) following instructions @ http://linux.junsun.net/intersil-prism/

allowed network manager see wireless network! (though strangely, not show other available networks in neighborhood laptop can see. it's doing right since detects changes in name , security settings of network -- maybe range of wireless card less?) however, when set wireless security 'none,' connection fails.

/var/log/daemon.log shows errors along line of
code:
home wpa_supplicant[831]: association request driver failed
i'm ready give (or @ least try new wireless card or ethernet adapter), thought i'd ask first if has ideas what's going wrong?

here's possibly useful diagnostic stuff:
code:

try using wicd
