Copy part of a symbol into a new page

hello all-

 

i'm trying break down rather large symbol.  if highlight second half of symbol , copy new symbol on new page, becomes garbled point impossible use it.

i tried using duplicate don't know did other looked copied elements existing symbol?

 

so,

1. duplicate , when better copy/paste?

2. how can copy piece of existing symbol create new symbol?

 

btw - idea of copying existing symbol , removing part don't want, although sounds best way it, not work whenever copy symbol, or try load new page, becomes garbled before (this discussion, "symbol corrupting on save?").
