How Do You Find a COMPETENT Joomla Consultant or Expert? - Joomla! Forum - community, help and support
i realize that must sound silly--i mean, there scads of "experts" on forum, right? mean, hell, ask them, or @ how they're identified "experts" simply because they've posted hundreds or thousands of times. (i note being able type lot doesn't mean knows bupkus topic, hope that self-evident.)
but i've had several experiences using experts, consultants, paid web-guys, etc., in various cms's, twice in joomla, in results, performance, etc., have been rather abysmal. background, wrote first site, using ee framework, , doing html/css hand. so, i'm no steely-eyed web-guru, neither totally illiterate websites, t3, bootstrap, etc.
in 1 instance, (joomla) had file paypal grievance, work done ("it'll done in 1 week") after 3 months of non-performance, after work had been paid in full. (in fact, vendor, had twice, not once; , no, i'm not stupid, stuck using them variety of reasons, second bit of work, although on one, on hook portion of it. stuck because template mods, , template creators)
in other (joomla), identified expert here on these forums said he'd solve issue, , answer questions it--then told me whole problem (this post: viewtopic.php?f=708&t=888280 ) because "[my] sef set wrong," which, near can tell, isn't remotely correct. (first he said because sef wasn't set in alexandria library module--which if @ faq on pages, states al works off of joomla's sef. url's al module rendering other sef'fed url's on whole site. asked him why thought sef module wasn't enabled, , never answered me.) when asked what, exactly, wrong sef setup, (after explaining i'd paid 1 joomla "expert" set me, mind you), said felt "expertise under scrutiny," , decided gracefully exit. this person charges same pretty else, have wonder, how hell can find out if consultant worth it?
when had expression engine, asked then-web guy doing work me write specific customized module. said would, then own module, , he'd resell it, plug-in, saw fit. now, bear in mind, wasn't doing module free; expected me pay entire development, , he'd own module. when explained that's not how "work hire" works, in big grown-up world, (i polite , not condescending, in discussion; i'm being snarky now), stormed off in huff , disappeared 2 months.
i'm looking @ 1 guy right now, seems competent, has required minimum number of hours, , it's not small bit of change...honestly, after that's happened, i'm pretty loathe consider paying web-guy upfront. experience, in 20 years on net is, work late. always. not days; months. , that's best-case scenario.
there's no "jed" joomla experts or consultants. there's nothing i've found on forum, in joomla "experts" ranked, rated, thumbs-upped or thumbs-downed. so, hence, question:
how know if self-proclaimed joomla expert says is, , deliver on goods? frankly, find pretty boggling; i've been in business decades, , shouldn't hard find web-folks work businesspeople, apparently, is.
any , advice welcomed. know post makes sound i'm hell on wheels work for, honestly--i'm not. lots of other folks, both consultants , contractors, manage work me, without drama , sturm , drang, but...for reason, "webside" of things seems huge problem. do--silly of me, know--actually expect people say, when they'll it, then, if don't, don't pitch fits, etc. of contractors , consultants have worked me years, without issue.
so: ideas, anyone? recommendations? i'm 1% away launch, , want last bit go smoothly. i'm trying write damned redirects, , need understand if weirdo url situation described in above-referenced post actual problem--or not. don't want lose pr, etc., google, if url's going hurt me, don't want throw away yet more money on consulting won't get, or nonsensical answers i know wrong.

sorry luck - used project manager large scale projects , difficult aspect of project finding reliable people.
in experience, 1 out of every 7 or 8 freelance consultants worked out - , stick ones do.
it goes basics - ask recommendations, referrals , portfolio of work - there no shortcuts , no guarantees - opinion.
(of course flip-side i.t. freelancers trying find clients).
with respect freelancer wanted keep code - gpl license under joomla distributed protects you.
the gpl license dictates once distributed, person whom code distributed owns it. gpl license 'infectious' - means if developer creates derivative work, derivative work licensed under gpl.
