Setting up a 35 page magazine
i have wanting me layout magazine released twice per year, has been while since set in indesign looking pointers people experience on how best set pages. appriciated.
hi jonny
firstly (and customer) needs consider specification , possible issues - page size, number of printed colours, type of paper, number of pages, whether it's ilustrated and, if so, source , quality of images, timing, distribution and, of course, not forgetting budget!
regarding number of pages, asuming it's printed magazine, need decide whether it's have "self cover" (that means having mag printed on same paper on pages) or have separate cover (the inside printed on lighter paper , cover printed on heavier paper , maybe laminated or varnished). can't have 35 page printed magazine, consider in terms of units of 4 or 8 pages. example, 32 pages or 48 pages self-cover issue or alternatively 32 pages plus 4 page cover latter specification.
having agreed above need consider design - (how text , pics supplied?) can produce grid, consider typefaces, masthead , on. idea produce sample pages using placeholder text, if final text isn't available, can use show , agree approach customer , maybe printer before proceeding.
you should book on how set indesign documents , lynda.com course invaluable. example: http://www.lynda.com/bridge-cs4-tutorials/designing-a-magazine-layout-hands-on-workshop/46 818-2.html
