hi,
i'm trying install mathematica 8, , downloaded websites.
however, when try open file downloaded (which named home/peder/downloads/mathematica_8.0.1_linux.sh) error saying this: "gedit has not been able detect character encoding.
please check not trying open binary file.
select character encoding menu , try again."

i'm running ubuntu 11.04. know how work?

i assume you're trying run gui? seem recall it's supposed give choice between running in terminal or viewing reason, computer assuming want view (gedit text editor)

sure-fire way run terminal. try following command

code:

sh /home/peder/downloads/mathematica_8.0.1_linux.sh

you may have preface command 'sudo' , type in password if complains permissions or doesn't work.
