Can I search for terms?

am working in ms vista service pack 2, java, netbeans.

project simple indexing system:

given list of terms in file, run them against document (only need read , contains unicode), creating simple index of following form (index output file):

 

term1 3, 6, 17;

term2 2, 8, 22, 28;

...

termn  5, 27;

 

i have tried poi on word doc, one's java cannot access page numbers.  can pdf document?
