Reduce Detail?

hello. have 1024x768 pixels background (for app). it's wood background. told need "reduce detail" because it's taking space. how do this?

when image > image size > resolution changes dimensions. don't want do.

not sure reducing resolution correct solution problem, here's how:

in image size dialog, deselect resample image. lock dimensions.

enter reduced resolution value, reselect resample image before clicking ok.
