i running small home network several pc/laptops using ubuntu 10.4 lts. had bit of network dip yesterday 8.48pm , lost network connection on laptop used record syslog log modem/router. ufw firewall logs on laptop showed loopback connections destined port 4713 @ time network went down.

computers set deny incoming traffic , allow outgoing traffic exception ports 514 ( syslog ) , 631 ( ipp ) , 161 ( snmp ) , 5353 (mdns ) allowed in. sharing printer on laptop uses ipp other computers on network can connect it. have ideas port 4713 used , why did generate traffic when network went down?

did search through ufw logs on pc , found references destination port 4713 on quite few different occasions yesterday. show src=127.0.0.1 dst 127.0.0.1 references mac 00:00:00:00:00:00.

second question - need mdns ( 5353 ) , snmp ( 161 ) run shared printer. know security issues these services - particularly mdns.

, using router should enough protect network instead of ufw on machines.
