The availability of color space in RAW, TIFF and JPEG files
this useful if new dslr photography.
this nikon response on question in discussion: view photo metadata
i'm assuming know adobe rgb shows 50% , srgb 35% of cielab color space.
- in dslr camera nikon d800 can select color space (adobe rgb or srgb) in shooting menu.
- in adobe lightroom 4.3 raw metadata shows no color space info. therefore asked why not?
- in (dutch) nikon d800 manual on page 84 (about raw) , 274 (about color space) , nikon faq website there no descripton color space availability/behavior in raw, jpeg , tiff files.
- in book "mastering nikon d800 darrel young" on page 125 - 126 written: "if shoot in raw format lot, may want consider using adobe rgb....."
- all experts on forum answered: color space not apply/affect raw data file or raw files have no color space.
- the respone of nikon europe support (robert vermeulen) was: in nikon d800 nef raw files both color spaces (adobe rgb , srgb) always physically available. in jpeg , tiff files in shooting menu selected color space physically available. forum experts gave correct answer!
- of course can convert afterwards jpeg or tiff file srgb color space adobe rgb don't more colors.
- when install microsoft camera codec pack or fastpictureviewer codec pack show color space metadata jpeg , tiff files , nothing raw because color space "doesn't exist". thought codec packs removed color space metadata raw files.
- adobe lightroom can not show color space raw files because "doesn't exist".

i still think evasive answer doesn't pinpoint exact chain of events take place. are:
1. raw file contains naked data captured sensor. dark grayscale image.
2. in raw converter encoded working color space process information. in lightroom known "melissa rgb", or linear gamma prophoto. demosaiced bring color information.
3. lightroom can exported 1 of familiar color spaces srgb or adobe rgb. is, in principle @ least, normal profile conversion.
these 3 steps camera produce jpeg. basic steps same, camera doing automatically (and butchering image in process...).
this darrell young is, i'm sure, excellent photographer, in confused , propagating common myth. anyway, bringing discussion, hope didn't object tone of answers... our concern here right and no room misunderstanding.
