Thread: Live USB Install Running as Home Network Server
hi guys,
looking thoughts/recommendations/alternatives/etc intended setup, ahead of me undertaking this...
have hp microserver (1.3ghz dual-core amd neo n36l, 8gb ram, 1gb nic)
ran esxi 4.1 update 1 hypervisor. had 2 vm's: test windows server 2008 r2 studying purposes, , amahi vm home network server duties.
unfortunately, don't think hardware capable enough, see 6mbps throughput afp or smb traffic , although not extensively tested, concerned vm's may suffer when under heavy load (i.e. whinging other-half if watching film whilst doing windows-based intensive task on server @ same time). plus can migrate vm needs vmware fusion running on mac.
having played amahi, greyhole home network server storage needs circumvents software raid have little faith in. also, greyhole drives mountable other linux installs, ext volume, migrations or issues. continue down road of linux server , turn ubuntu (probably server edition in case, honest). serving primary storage xbmc installations on network network backup location.
intending run "live usb" installation, , 8gb of ram have installed, hope run out of ram. newer live usb setup, have persistent partition in order save additions/amendments/installations/etc. device has 4-bay hard drive capacity, reserve data/media aspects of setup, , internal usb slot unit can boot again intention.
having never run type of install before, have seen many pluses running way (to minimise usb disk writes, takes advantage of mountains or ram have available on system, fastest "storage" medium available) on installing o/s usb disk.
other server-based installations in setup? namely, apache, bind, dhcp, samba, greyhole, mysql, php, primary functions of server. work well/better/worse in "running ram setup"? or still rely heavily on usb device, including persistent volume?
others interpretation of this?
how still going reliant on usb disk read/writes during normal operations?
cheers
