Thread: Is SQL really that useful?

i'm hobbyist programmer , have been several years now. when want store information program use (for example php login page), have usernames , passwods (hashed , salted of course) stored in text files , have php script iterate through entries in text file until finds match. have been told bad habit , should learn sql (which find extremely annoying due syntax). practice bad? worth limiting third party software used , effort?

for simple username/password database, unless have millions of accounts, plain text file appropriate. how system accounts stored, example. sql more complex stuff, example imagine messages , user data of forum stored in text file!
