Thread: VPN Question: Ubuntu Server 10.04
i've been running own home server several months now. it's using ubuntu server 10.04 , i'm using webmin of more mundane tasks.
i'm educated on _what_ vpn is. , i'm able _connect_ remote server via vpn. company runs ms exchange server , can connect via vpn enough. i've done many many google searches, there's hole in knowledge, , i'm hoping shove in right direction.
process vpn home server? have static ip dyndns, create user account on server , vpn via public ip , put in user name , password? simple?
or, there have set on server allow vpn connections?
as far know, there 2 options: pptpd or openvpn. there plenty of docs on last one: overview, vpnserver, vpnclient, , installation. found pptpd: gaming_vpn_using_pptpd, , setup ubuntu vpn server.
hope helps.
personal note, don't use vpn connect home network. openssh provides need. connect server use ssh client. access files use sftp (command line , nautilus ubuntu, , winscp windows).
when need work "as if connected network", use ssh tunneling. works great applications can handle socks proxies, firefox, thunderbird, , jdownloader.
thoughts,
regards.
