Thread: email "proxy" - conception question

hi!

i'm sorry if realy stupid question, i'm frustrated. work little admin 1 department @ university , our email-server, adminstrated university, not department, crashes, looses connection mailboxes, denies connections , on.
university seems not capable fix this.

thought: isn't possible build own "mail proxy". mail server has fetch new mails "real" server, stores them. if "real" server down again - talk proxy - deliver changes when "real" server responses again.

of time imap-server goes down, sending shouldn't main problem.

solution see far, setting own server , using fetchmail "copy" accounts. dream transparent solution. squid imap there solutions problem? maybe solutions don't need whole mailserver (i'm not sure if can build more resistent mail server - difference is, department smaller university )
